Could anybody give me insights about Open Source ERP, benefits over specific modules other than the cost implications/ Also, are there any risks involved? Does there exist any framework for the implementation process?

Regarding insights about Open Source ERP, there are very good articles, see below three of them:

  1. Infoworld: Open source is picking up momentum in the ERP market because of its flexibility and relatively low cost.
  2. CIO.com: What’s the most exciting technology of the next few years for the enterprise?
  3. ComputerWeekly: Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software suppliers – Essential Guide

Some Companies selling Open Source ERP Solutions are:

  1. MyERP5.com
  2. Openbravo is the leading fully functional integrated web-based open source ERP
  3. Opentaps Open Source ERP CRM Enterprise Resource Planning and Customer Relations Management Manufacturing Software.
  4. Compiere open source ERP solution with CRM capabilities.

Benefits:
Since it can be hosted on manufacturer servers, it removes your botherations of installation, maintenance, uptime, upkeep etc. against a fixed cost and SLA

Risks:
Security, Safety of your crucial business data is getting exposed but that can be taken care by a contract and penalties clause in SLA

Regarding a fixed framework for implementation – the process is simple but demands highly dedicated and sincere efforts – the process is Understand business, find gaps (gap analysis), fill gaps, User acceptance, training, implementation. This process I have listed broadly and in an unstructured manner that can further be broken down to micro level and defined milestones.

    Hi Vibha,

I have tried setting up ERPnext ERP system for our organisation. It's hosted on our own SSL servers so security is not much of a concern. The pros are that it can help in doing anything that other CRM systems enable such as recording and mailing leads or job applicants; even useful for HR processes such as leave applications.
The only drawback I feel is that it's not as robust as Salesforce and also the analytics part is a bit weak. Also, you need some good technical people to set it up and customize to suit your requirements. All the best.
