With the recent Microsoft move consolidating efforts with Nokia (and there are rumors about HTC acquisition also), I think Google needed an hardware partner too, mainly to boost - even more - the Android development.
Since Android became not-so-open-source - decision that I understand and considering early developments was needed to give it stability and credibility - Google need to have control over the whole line of business.
Motorola by it's side is, in my opinion, the manufacturer that have not-the-best Android UI (MotoBlur UI). I think Google will take over it and let the future MotoGoogle phones and tablets take the standard Android UI.
I think this partnership is a win-win for both Motorola and Google. But also if not already done, it may be pushing another huge vendor (read HTC) towards Microsoft.

Since many hardware manufacturers have chosen Android for their devices, this Motorola acquisition could scare them, like manufacturers working with Windows phone (or Windows mobile) might have been scared when Microsoft partnered with Nokia, (even though Microsoft didn’t acquire Nokia, but just partnered with them).
Many people say that Google itself is probably not sure about what they are going to do with Motorola. The many patents owned by Motorola are a main topic when analyzing this deal.
In my opinion, the huge growth of Android over the past couple of years was possible because Google didn’t marry a specific hardware manufacturer.

Certainly, there’s no question they’re after the patents. It’ll be interesting how much effor they put into improving the products though.
It’s a good move on their part.
I am thrilled that Google is aquiring Motorola. It will imporve the integration between the hardware and the software. I wish everything performed as well as gmail.
