Trial period software
Amazon Web Services will start its one-year trial subscription on November 1st, and we're wondering who's going to give it a try. If not AWS, what services have you adopted by first giving them a trial run that you might otherwise have not gotten off the fence about?

Thanks, CharlieBrowne! Do you think you would've purchased those packages without the free trial? I'll add your points right now. - Melanie

I think most of the time everyone will need a POC (proof of concept) / trial period before buying anything. My side always does that especially if the item / hardware or software will cost quite a bomb to really see if it works before purchasing as it should be able to cater to our needs before we purchase it. if lets say there is no POC and if we only can get information from the websites or forum's then I guess it is not worth while purchasing as it might not work out for the environment

I got a navigation (GPS) application for my phone. I tried if for free and loved it. It replaced my car GPS. I would not have got it.. if they hadnt offered it for free since I already had car GPS which was already paid for.

I was working some contract projects for a nearby city quite a few years ago. The State Auditors were doing their regular rounds and were in town for a couple weeks looking over every bit of data they could think to ask for. Shortly before, I had asked for a trial of a recently released product for the System/38 called Sequel. I was playing around with it, learning how SQL-like command functions could make a number of reporting tasks easier. In the midst of my testing, requests started coming in from Administrative offices for report after report from all kinds of areas. I was able to satisfy each request with rapid turnaround. I was impressed enough that I submitted a "buy now" recommendation through the DP manager to the City Council, which was pretty quickly turned down. IIRC, it was a $1200 cost at that time. The next day, more report requests came down to which I responded with estimates of a week or two to fulfill. I was immediately confronted with questions from above asking why so many requests had been handled quickly, but now things were having the customary delays. I explained that I'd been testing a product but that the purchase had been turned down. I had to go back to the old way of doing things. The City Manager's office got the purchase approval pushed through in two days. Almost no one wants to get along without SQL nowadays. Back 25 years ago on the S/38, it was a real treat to learn how useful it would become. Tom

Great story, Tom! Thanks for sharing. You never know how revolutionary a technology's going to be until you test it out in real-life situations, and in most cases, it'll speak for itself. Added your points! Thanks, Melanie
