 Converting old computers with Linux
[title][/title] [style type="text/css"> <!-- @page { size: 8.5in 11in; margin: 0.79in } P { margin-bottom: 0.08in } --> [/style] I have 34 computers. In which 16 are P3 1.10 Ghz, Foxconn MB with various mb of ram viz. 128Mb, 256mb even 64mb are also there..And rest r Intel P4 2.80 Ghz, original MB with 512 mb ram. HDD r all 80 gb (some of them were replaced by new hdd). They r all loaded with mixed windows flavours like 98SE, XP. Now I am trying to convert all the computers with Linux OS (SLED and Fedora with only one to be a Server). Any one can help me to what considerations shall I consider to do the job. I mean to say, with / without change HW except ram for 16 computers.

Thanks to all !

Ok, It's a good idea to make groups of computer thar are identical in hardware (if there are), because you can do an unattend installation using kickstart http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kickstart_%28Linux%29" Another consideration is to review all the machines searching for chipsets for video and network mainly and download the drivers before the installation begins. With video and network working good you can search for the rest of drivers using the internet in every machine. Also consider another distribution of linux, due your reduced hardward capabilities, maybe a xubuntu version can run better, because it uses XFCE, a lightweight desktop manager. Tell us more about the purpose for these computers, something like what you will do with they. The are for kids learning ? offimatic work? researching ? Regards.

Definitely, ur idea is considerable. The purpose of the computers to be used for old VB program as an EXE running via wine. This is based on accounting package. There r also some old DMPs for printing purpose.
