Office 97 installing on Windows XP Problems
Does anyone know of problems installing Office 97 SR-1 onto Windows XP SP 2? We get an incomplete installation after Office setup is ran, but Word and Excel seem to work. Also spell check doesn't work for either Office or Outlook Express 6, We can't get both to work at the same time. I found this link , but it didn't help us. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;257643. Also we seem to be getting file is open and you can't over write the file, error when tring to work on a file on our network and saving it. Any help would be apriciated we can upgrade because our Cop. offices won't let us. Thanks in advance

Answer Wiki:
A - Run the SP2 patches for Office 97 first. These are also known as the 'y2k' fixes. There are big problems with installing Office 97 on XP SP1/SP2 for core DLL conflicts. 1 - Setup clean system - install XP and SP2 no network 2 - install anti-virus/anti-spyware no network 3 - attach to network load patches 4 - Install Office 97 SR-1 5 - Install Office97 SP2 6 - check and update windows for patches. 7 - should be good B - spell check will not work for both at the same time. The incomplete install, spell check conflicts, all are reminders that Office 97 is off life support and every patch, every new program is a chance to lose function. If the corporate office is 'stuck' on 97, then look at OpenOffice as it is 'Document' compatible. It works well on XP.

When I try to run the SP2 update it tells me that there isn’t a valid Office install on the PC. Microsoft’s website says when you get this message to run the SP1 update and try SP2 update again I tried that and received the same message.

I will try the way you said for a clean system setup when I get a new PC to setup

Thanks for your advice
