I have tried Client Access V5R4 but it will not work.
Why not? What happens? Does it install okay? Are there error messages?
Can you access the V4R2 system in other ways (telnet?)
I won’t be surprised if there is no combination that works. The Win7 networking is very different from similar networking back when OS/400 version 4 was connected to from Windows PCs. Win7 might no longer be able to handle it. IIRC, back then, ODBC through Client Access would connect through a different service than most competing ODBC drivers. You’d see evidence of it when CA-ODBC transactions would report through different exit points than most other ODBC drivers.
The basic TCP/IP is the same, but the install code quite possibly will attempt to execute functions that no longer make sense. The execution of the old driver code would possibly have similar problems to the install code. IBM support for V4R2 only stretched past the Windows 2000 release date by a couple months, so the V4R2 ODBC drivers would be for Win95 and WinNT at best. And that’s the level of networking support that the V4R2 database server would be giving at best.
In short, there might be a medium-old driver that both talks to V4R2 and also installs and runs on Win7. It’ll be interesting to see if it can work. I wouldn’t create major hopes over it yet.

Let me expand on what is happening. CA 5.4 will install without issue on Win7. You can open Operations Navigator and create a connection successfully. But when you try to create a DSN you get a very vague error that will either say somehting about a SQL error or driver error.
I did go to a XP machine and install an older HIT driver and it works perfectly. Problem is that HIT driver will not install on Win7. I also tried to instal CA Express 4.5 on Win7 machine but it fails part the way through the initial installation.

WinXP was released just as V4R2 was fully fading out, and it fully supports older Windows networking. I don’t know the HIT technology used; can you do a netstat on the WinXP PC to see what ports it connects to? I’m pretty sure it connects via DRDA, like the CA drivers of the time and unlike most ODBC drivers.
I don’t know how compatible more recent DRDA drivers might be with V4R2. It’s just too far in the past.

Different registry keys, different security settings in Win7, different system calls… I’m not sure anyone’s had much luck getting older (pre-V5R4) drivers into Win7. That doesn’t seem to be a good direction to put effort.
