May be a little bit stupid answer, but…

Open you Inbox (check that you are not activate option “Show Unread only”)
and than press Ctrl+A (Edit => Select All).
This will select all documents in your view/folder (in our particular case Inbox)
and total document number will be displayed in status bar (xxx documents selected)

Thanks! I would have never thought of that. Now here's a stupid question: After I select all, how do I unselect all? I Xd out and went back in..... (NOT a computer guy here!)

From the Edit menu, choose Deselect All. On a PC, you can use the keystroke combination Alt + E, then D. (If you use start using the keystroke combination, you have made your first foray into geekdom).

File > Application > Properties Go to the information tab - this has a document count on it.

On a related note: you can 'manually' select individual messages by clicking in the left margin, then take action on all of them, such as Delete, or Move to Folder.

Okay to extend his question, in Outlook I can select the option to have the number of all items displayed in each folder - not just unread. Can I do the same in Notes 8.5.1? I am having to mark all items unread (even though they have been read already) so I can have folders such as Pending From Others with an item count.
