I am receiving the following message while trying to install these two windows security updates: KB981852, and KB956572 - "the file c:windowssystem32ntkrnlpa.exe is open or in use by another application"

hi..just for suggestion..
It always pays to check for any infections first…

you could boot to safe mode “f8″ with networking and carry out installing updates…see if this is any use to you, check that you are connected to Internet.

I had issues with Windows 7 updates error at few times….i had to revert updates and updated again directly to microsoft websites. im sure it would also work for xp..

    Maybe you could use Sysinternals' Process Explorer to see what application is using or executing the file. Use the "Find"->"Find handle or DLL" option and see if it finds it.
