When using the NTBackup utility to reach out and backup files on a network share (not on the server where NTBackup is running), does the Volume Shadowcopy service fail to work in such a situation? As I understand it, NTBackup uses VSC to allow you to back up in-use files, but I am suspecting that it will not do so if the files are on a device other than the local one. I need to verify this, though.

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

You are correct it uses VSC only on open files on itself. If you want to do a backup of in use files run the NTbackup application on the computer in question. I use scripts to accomplish this and aggregate the files on a back up server.

Since VSC came into play backing up is a whole different ball game!
