What I need to do: I want a 3 day rotation with a complete normal backup of a server. I only want to keep 3 files on the back up drive, thus I need the back ups to either delete or append each day. Back up needs to happen every day.  So Question is:  How best can this be accomplished? Am I missing something in NTBackup settings or scheduling that allows for multiple days of back ups to be done set to a custom schedule? Could use some insight into first, is this possible to do with the proprietary Windows Server backup utility, or do I need to invest in a third party solution? And Second, if it can be done with NTBackup, what did I miss on how to accomplish this?

Software/Hardware used:
NTBackup

Why just 3 backups? Many small businesses keep at least 5 backups available to lessen the chances of having a bad backup that is not able to do a full restore of their data. The more backups you have available the better. What happens if a file is discovered to be missing because someone accidentally deleted it last week? How will you recover it?

With NTBACKUP, I create a directory on the disk for each backup I am going to maintain, and then schedule a backup for each day to go to a specific directory, overwriting what is already there. Each job is designated by the directory name of where it is stored. With a five day rotation, I have a directory named for each day of the week (Monday through Friday) and schedule a job to run each day. I am not sure how I would create a three day schedule unless it is only running 3 days of the week.

Thanks for the input Steve, but the why's are not important to me. Just the how-to's. the back up does run daily, just need 3 copies done once every third day. Main reason is limited space. If I had terabytes of NAS or other strage methods, then doing daily back-ups would be great, but having limited space = limited back-ups. Pretty sure I will be going with NovaBackup software. it's simple to set up and manage, and has the built in Email notification the SysAdmin is looking for.
