I recently purchased a 2501 Cisco router off of ebay. I am having trouble connecting to the console port. Is there a way to diagnose the problem? I am using a rollover cable and the proper settings for the terminal emulation program. I can hook up to my other 2500 series router and I unplug that router and plug the cable into the 2501 and I get nothing. Any ideas?

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

If you say that terminal settings are OK, try to run same test on an any other cisco router if you can. U have to find the source of the problem.. is it faulty hardware, faulty IOS or fauly connection to the PC.

I know that the cable and the computer settings are OK because I have tested another router. I am now trying to figure out if the problem is hardware or software related with the router. I'm not sure if it is software because I can't even access the software. Any ideas?

Is it possable to that the baud rate got changed on the router. Have you tried different baudrates on the PC side?

I think there may have two cases: 1. hardware issue. 2. the default bandwidth 9600 in the router has been changed.

I have not officially trid different baud rates. I know when I was messing with it I change the baud once or twice. Is my best bet to switch the baud rate then reboot the router and send a Break within the first 30-60 seconds? Any handy was of telling if the hardware is messed up? Thanks for your help.

Is it brand new or used?

It is used. The funny thing is I purchased two of them and the one that works is dented and looks like crap. This one, the one that does not work, looks brand new. I don't know what to do. The seller claimed "it came from a working environmnet" I just want to know if there is a way to diagnose hardware problems or if I should just cut my losses.

It seems that you can't use the console port at all. See if you can get the ip address and subnet mask from the seller. Then configure your laptop as a peer to peer with the router by plugging into one of the ports. Check the config. Work around Good luck
