No Connectivity After OS Upgrade

I just upgraded my 2000 Compaq DeskPro (Pentiium III, 797MHz, 128MB RAM) from the Windows 98SE that it came with to XP Version 2002 because my wife's Sony eReader only works on XP or Vista. We live in the boonies and only have dial-up. Went to my cousin's where he has 3mb DSL, connected an updated XP to Service Pack 3. Even updated modem driver. Back home here, modem is found, diagnostic tab in Device Manager shows "device is working properly", but the modem is NOT found on any attempt to set up a dial-up connection. Yikes! What happened to my modem and how can I "find" it again to use it? Have not been able to find much about this problem in this context (OS upgrade). Grateful in advance for any help. Thanks, Michael

Check the COM port settings. Maybe another device (infrared or other serial device) may have taken the com port that your dial application is expecting. See if your dialing application can change to another com port and if the same results happen when attempting to dial. You can also try clicking Start, Run, msinfo32.exe. There will be a modem item under system config summary. It will tell you information about the modem, driver, ports, etc. Did you do an in-place upgrade or did you wipe the drive and install from scratch? I know it sounds like a lot of work, but you should have done the drive wipe and install from scratch. Otherwise, you may continue to have issues like you describe above.
