Open IT ForumShamus McGillicuddy recently delved into the topic of next-generation firewalls, and I wanted to know -- how many of you have implemented next-gen firewalls in your environment? Do you see this as being a legitimate trend for the future, or is it just a lot of hype?

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

Our current firewall is coming to end-of-life, and after reviewing a few Next-Gen firewalls, I’m confident that they are here to stay. The prospect of consolidating your anti-spam software/appliance, your web filter, and your firewall into a single appliance puts real value into that device.

Just like the VPN capabilities in current generation firewalls, adding more features directly to your network’s core security device reduces security concerns and networking complexity.

Their utility is certainly nice but based on my experience doing Web application penetration tests, they don't offer anything new for traffic's going over HTTPS/SSL. This is a big oversight/misperception many people have of these systems.
