Does anyone have data points on the new Symmetrix coming out later this year? I'm interested in some preliminary data for comparison with other arrays particularly Engenio's.

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

I’ve seen it. The new Symm is huge. It can accomodate FC disk and SATA disk, so you can use it for primary and secondary storage. Very modular in design. I think EMC still has the best product.

I'm not so sure... true its big but I dont think there are enough new features for it to "turn heads". In most respects I think its evolutionary, not revolutionary. But having said that, (can't say too much) there are some surprising changes to the architecture due to the large number of disks. All will be revealed this week I believe.

So I guess one question I would ask is would you mix SATA and FC behind a DMX? My thoughts are that you have invested in a high-end controller, is it appropriate for "low-end" data which would reside on SATA? Wouldn't a low-end Clariion be a better match for this type of data?

Just as a point of clarification, the new Symm *doesn't* support SATA drives. Instead, DMX-3 will support Seagate's "low cost" high capacity Fibre Channel drives, like HP does with its EVA and Xiotech with the Magnitude 3D. At least, that's what I gather from their announcement on Monday.
