Covert the IP addresses of all the network you want to summarize to binary and then determine how many bits are common in each address. For example, the addresses 172.16.168.0, 172.16.169.0, 172.16.170.0, 172.16.171.0 and 172.16.172.0, 172.16.173.0, 172.16.174.0, and 172.16.175.0 binary notation is as follows:

10101100.00010000.10101000.00000000
10101100.00010000.10101001.00000000
10101100.00010000.10101010.00000000
10101100.00010000.10101011.00000000
10101100.00010000.10101100.00000000
10101100.00010000.10101101.00000000
10101100.00010000.10101110.00000000
10101100.00010000.10101111.00000000

The bits that are bold are the ones that are common (the same). When you count the bits you see that 21 bits are common. Set all of the bits that are not common to 0 and you can determine the network address that should be used with the subset of /21. In this case the advertised summary route would be 172.16.168.0/21
