Networking: How to step through a TCP/IP stack

I was a recent QA engineer that worked for a proprietary embedded operating system. My company built a ATN stack and I have to admit, the best moment I had there was stepping through it with a debugger (eye-opening network moment). Just watching each layer build their part of the packet was amazing. Now, I'm an educator so I would like to share my experience with others. Would anyone know of a straight-forward method through a TCP/IP stack? Is there anything easier than BSD or Linux Kernel? Any help would be great!
