If i understand your question correctly. You have one computer that has an internet connection and several others that dont. You want all computers to connect to the internet through the one computer that has an internet connection?

not sure why you wouldnt want to use a switch or better yet, a small home router.

I suppose you could get wireless network cards or wireless usb adaters for all computers. Set up internet connection sharing on the internet connected machine. without a DHCP server all your computers (2000, XP or Vista) will get an automatic IP address (169.254.x.x). they could then connect add-hoc to the internet connection machine and get out to the inernet.

i agreed to what bhennon said. i think you're setting up a small LAN but i think you really need to use a hub or maybe an 8-port switch *(you'll provide the cables) or one of the best way is to purchase a small router and use Wireless cards so you dont have to bother yourself in connecting cables (although when connected to a cable, there's a less chance of getting disconnected compared to using Wireless) its really your choice and i think (if i am right) in access points (wireless router) there is a 10-meter radius for you to have a great signal and it diminishes going beyond. one internet line and you'll share it with many; you're gonna need a router or a switch for that.
