Answer Wiki:
You can always try BackTrack 3, it is a Linux OS and it has all types of network discovery, wired/wireless monitoring, among other things as well. It is a great tool for pen testing and checking network security. =================== Another excellent resource is the <a href="http://www.networksecuritytoolkit.org/nst/index.html">Network Security Toolkit</a>. This was just updated in January and uses Fedora 8.

Check out the Open Source Security Testing Methodology Manual at http://www.isecom.org/osstmm. I’ve written articles, presented webcasts, and recorded podcasts for various TechTarget sites that covers this area extensively. You can link to them at http://www.principlelogic.com/resources.html. Hope this helps!
