network problems on laptop once windows XP SP2 intalled
Heres an interestiong one thats got me flummoxed...
Dell Inspiron 2650 laptops work fine on peer to peer workgroup. Install SP2 and they report "cable unplugged"
Update to latest 3com network drivers (2003!) still same problem. Link directly via a crosover cable to a none SP2 machine, hey presto the two computers see each other!
Have tested network cable (fine) have tested swithch (fine) ipconfig says "Media state......:Media disconnected"
Firewall (Zone alarm) disabled, uninstalled, you name it, no difference. Windows Firewall off too.

It looks like this is a problem on IP level.
Possibly some configuration setting has been reset when you installed SP2.
You could check a few things to verify that hypothesis:
- Does 'ipconfig /all' show the device with correct
settings for IP address subnet mask, default gateway,
DNS servers, etc.?
- Are the settings for the network interface correct?
(network connections/<interface>/properties)
are the needed protocols present?
under 'Internet protocol':
is the IP address setting correct? (either set by DHCP or
everything manually configured)
(Peer-to-peer over a cross-cable may work, because in that case Windows assigns IP addresses (that are rather strange, but make things work together without configuration), while you don't need a default gw, etc.)

I found the problem.
The user had not uninstalled Zone Alarm (just deleted the shortcut and task bar icon) And SP2 had removed the lan ip range from the trusted zone hence no lan activity. Doh!
Sorry for the inconvenience folks, but if anyone else put SP2 on a Zone Alarmed machine and looses network, you know why!
