Not really sure what you are asking, but I hope this answers your question. The most secure way to access a server is to place it behind a firewall and make sure to keep rdp (tcp 3389) closed so no one can connect on it. Then you would want to setup a vpn connection to your firewall. This will encrypt your rdp session through the internet and allow you to rdp to your server.

I think that your working in the right direction, but you will not be able to find the answer to this particular question. First, I would suggest defining the terms your Techie through at you, then finding out how they "compare". You may find that the jargon you picked up along the way is what is preventing you from figuring out what it is you want (to do). Alternatively, you can ask "Which is more of a fruit, apples or lemons?" questions all day long, and sift through assorted answers until you find an answer that suits your needs.
