network drives and external drives

Network Drive Mapping
Our server has several shared directories.  These are mapped to letters on each client computer.
We use AutoCAD and X-refs for a large amount of our work.  Sometimes we need to take a laptop to a client's location to show them the progress of the job.
What we have been doing is copying the drawing data from the network onto an external drive.  We then disconnect the networked drive (K:) and remap the external drive to the same drive letter (K:).  Because the directory structure matches that of the network location, the x-refs for AutoCAD come in correctly.
Then when we bring the laptop back into the main office we re-map the network drive back to 'K:' and continue working with the data on the network.
What I'd like to know is if there is any software that can manage that kind of change-over automatically?

Software/Hardware used:
Windows 7, AutoCAD
