Network connectivity problems on VPN

My wife is a Medical Language Specialist who provides transcription services from her home office via VPN. Her VPN access is very intermittent and may drop out dozens of times throughout the day. I also work from our home using the same Internet connection with no interruptions of my service (I do not use VPN). The IT staff at her company has exhausted their solutions in this effort with no positive result. Any direction you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like an intermittent connectivity problem from your ISP. When using a VPN you have to maintain a consistent network connection. If the network connection drops for even a second or less then the VPN connection will drop. While you may not notice this when using the internet normally, the VPN software will be sensitive enough to see this as a problem.

Do you use the same computer to make a VPN connection? If not, there could be some aspect of her connection, as simple as a loose cable, or a tricky as a conflict between drivers that could be causing the problem. Try switching computers for a day and see if the problem follows her to your system, of if it stays on her box. If it moves with her, the problem is most likely a problem on her company’s end of the VPN. If it does NOT move with her, check for the latest drivers, replace the network cable, or reseat the network card.
Good Luck!

What VPN client does she use on that PC? I've found that with the Cisco VPN client, you can go into the connection properties and on the “Transport” tab select IPSEC over TCP and leave the default port number for major improvement in staying connected.
