is there some substitute for netterm of xp in linux ?

Whatever functionality of netterm you need (telnet client, dialup client), you have native unix tools in every linux distribution. Telnet terminal is called telnet :o) and its manual page could be called by “man telnet”. Dialup connections are usually accomplished by ppp tools ( look up howto here: tldp.org/HOWTO/PPP-HOWTO/ ). Serial terminal functionality is implemented in minicom (“man minicom”) .

Any of this clients may be not installed by default in your distribution (which one, BTW?) but this is quite unlikely, since these are basic network tools.
