Need to upgrade sql server

Hi right now my database server running on sql server 2000 & my application is also running from the same server for heavy load on server i m going to seperate my database server & application server i need a help bocz my database size is all most 3 GB. also i need to upgrade my database on new server so tell how to seperate my database & application server what are the steps to move database in to new server. my new server has all ready sql server 2005 and in my database on old server its running on sql server 2000 so is there any problem for me ? i just confused plz help me. 1st i seperate my database or i can dirctly upload a dabase on new server which is sql server 2005

The easiest way to do this is to stop the application on the server. Then backup the SQL 2000 database, and restore it to the SQL 2005 server. After you have done this, stop and disable the SQL 2000 service. Then reconfigure the application to point to the SQL 2005 server and restart the application.
