As already said, it must be something very wrong if by shutting down an Exchange Server you’ll need to worry about…

Even you can do it just out-of-the-box, (Start Menu -> Shutdown), for shutting down or rebooting purposes, there is a procedure that can get you extra time if your server is also a DC. In case your server is also a DC, you might need to wait 15 to 30 minutes. Yes that’s right.
To speed things up, please read this little article which also provides a batch file that allows you to Reboot or Shutdown the server more quickly. It shuts down the main AD and Exchange services in order to prevent them to time out, this way speeding things up.
