Need help reducing application downtime during updates

I have an application which does monthly update of data in Database and also does select queries or minor updates. Monthly updates last for 24 hrs and application is down during the time. I am planning to use 2 schemas. The first one will be used for minor updates/selects. The other one will be used for monthly update in first month. Once it is done, the second one will be used for minor updates/selects. Thus no downtime will be there for application. Will this method work? Or is there another way? Thank you.

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

This will work but keeping the data synced between the two schemas will be difficult. It’s much easier to keep everything in a single schema.

What’s the cause of the month end update statement taking so long? Are the tables indexed correctly? Are there indexes which can be removed? Are the disks queueing to much?

Your will probably be better served in the long run to try and fix the performance problem on the existing system before you try and create a duplicate which will make the management of the data much more complex.
