First thing I would try: right-click on your desktop, go to 'Properties', go to the 'Desktop' tab, click on 'Customize Desktop', in the 'Desktop icons' frame check whether the 'My documents' option is selected. It should be selected (if you want to see the shortcut on the desktop). You could also open the windows explorer and navigate to C:Documents and Settings<your username> to see if the 'My Documents' folder exist.
