Answer Wiki:
First thing I would try: right-click on your desktop, go to 'Properties', go to the 'Desktop' tab, click on 'Customize Desktop', in the 'Desktop icons' frame check whether the 'My documents' option is selected. It should be selected (if you want to see the shortcut on the desktop). You could also open the windows explorer and navigate to C:Documents and Settings<your username> to see if the 'My Documents' folder exist. You are not allowed to rename or remove the 'My documents' folder of your own user, but other user with administrative privileges can do it. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Make sure you are set to view icons. Right click>Arrange Icons By>Show Desktop Icons. Hope this helps! -Schmidtw *********************************************************************************** I have checked under desktop properties>cutomize desktop that my document is listed and the box is checked. It is also listed as a folder under my user name. Also when you go to start>my documents folder is not listed on the start menu. *********************************************************************************** Try this: Right click your task bar Go to the "start menu" tab Click on the "Customize" button Go to the "Advanced" page In the "Start Menu items" list, look for "My Documents" and select "Display as a link" or "Display as a menu". If some of these options were already selected, try selecting "Don't display this item", click Ok, click Apply, and repeat this procedure but now select "Display as a link" or "Display as a menu", and apply changes.

I appear to have the same problem, the only difference seems to be that for me “My Documents” icon shows on the desktop without the name under it. When I dbl click I get nothing. When I right click I get a menu with these options……

Cut
Create Shortcut
Delete

Was this issue resolved? How?

I didn’t realize it would be as easy as Schmidtw suggested, but it was. I followed the instructions he provided, and everything was back where I expected it to be. I’m a hero again for my father-in-law.

Thanks, Schmidtw!
