MSSQL service SQL service icon in the system tray does not have a green arrow on it
I know Windows Sharepoint services with Windows Server 2000 installs SQL MSDE by default and the installation of same occurred successfully but how come afterwards the SQL service icon in the system tray does not have a green arrow on it instead it has a white filled-in circle and when I launch it the server and services drop-down menus are blank? When I try to start it a message comes up and says "This service control action cannot be completed as no service has been selected".

Answer Wiki:
In the Server dropdown you need to select the named instance of MSDE which was installed. I believe that when Sharepoint installs MSDE it installs it as a named instance which won't show up by default in the server manager. It's a known issue with the server manager that comes with SQL 2000. I would recommend using the Services icon in the Administrative Tools window to start and stop the services. The server manager is removed starting with SQL Server 2005.
