Are there any downsides to moving to VMware VDI for my corporate desktop estate? If I use vmware then I can also selectively provide Linux as an alternative desktop to my users. This question is from the Microsoft Virtualization Chat on ITKnowledgeExchange.com

Depending on configuration, it may not be the answer. With VDI, you are effectively replacing local desktops with VMs. Terminal Services has been doing the same thing for many years (as the old Winframe admin speaks :) ). You have to balance the cost and re-architecture versus the savings. Could App-V, MED-V, or TS solve the same issue? Also, Microsoft has a VDI solution with Hyper-V and Hyper-V supports SUSE and soon, Red Hat also.
