MONSWABRM is a critical piece for reducing down time of applications and/or systems. When implemented properly, the MONSWABRM command can be used to call programs which can do any number of things. I use the MONSWABRM command in almost every backup, in HA environments and non-HA environments. Each system (lpar) was set up individually to use the MONSWABRM command as it was needed on each system - over 70 lpars running 1-5 backups a day. One scenario was to shut down one data group (HA), wait 2 minutes, and start the previous data group up. The MONSWABRM command only allows one command, however, it can be a call to a program to do whatever is needed. Note: When using the MONSWABRM command, be sure to evaluate the size of the library or group of libraries to be saved and estimated time to capture the synch point for the proper amount of data. If your system is using a lot of processing at the time of your backup, the time to reach the synch point may exceed the system default (1 hour). If this happens, you will see your MONSWABRM job complete normally, but it will not call the program or command as specified. To fix this, either re-evaluate the amount of data being saved per MONSWABRM command or increase the time limit (F4 on the MONSWABRM command and adjust the time parameter).
