Can we monitor SMART hard drive status via Active Directory or via SpiceWorks to know before a potential hard drive failure? How would this work. Client machines are XP and 7.

IF I am not wrong, I don’t think spiceworks can tell you when your hard disk is going to fail..

In my own opinion, it is not actually important to monitor the activity or status of the hard disk drive. The most important thing for me to consider is to constantly backup all the important files or the entire hard disk image if necessary. This is because you cannot determine the exact time of a hard disk drive to fail, the important is you have all the important files from your back up storage device.

Jinteik, SMART hard drives have a mechanism to report when some specific conditions are met which could be a sign that something is going to fail. In this case Spiceworks doesn't need to 'detect' that the drive is going to fail, but just read or receive the SMART drive notification of the possible failure, so it doesn't sound too far fetched. There are some windows applications to monitor SMART drives, and I think some of them are free. Maybe a Google search will offer some options. Depending on how the drives expose or report their details (SNMP for example), a monitoring application such as Spiceworks could be able to monitor them.
