Migrate Software applications, for Vista to Windows 7 OS upgrade
I want to upgrade my OS from Vista to windows 7. What is the best way to migrate some of the software (none microsoft apps) without having to re-install it again.

Many apps write their data to the registry. Some also install their own libraries and whatnot to other folders. Apps like these will not typically relocate well by just a copy/paste from a backup: they need to be reinstalled. The only *easy* way I have ever seen to transfer these kinds of programs intact is to do a direct upgrade from Vista to 7.
Of course, some apps (Eclipse comes to mind) install everything right there in the program's directory. Those types of programs will be the least-affected by a manual transfer to a new installation.

Great Thanks. I was wondering if there’s any public domain software , similiar to “PCmover from laplink” that seems to allow transfer of programs and settings to new PC. I’m not too sure how well it works. Has anyone had experience with such. But like you say the best would be to re-install.
Great post Buzz4know!//. Ive had alot of customers upgraded to Win7 and would love to know moving of old programs across. So far had no luck yet but to advised them to reintall particular software..Would love to hear a great suggestion that would actually work!
The problem lies with the fact that some applications do not write their data directly to the Windows registry, which makes re-install the norm. However if you are only dealing with a handful of these applications then the starting from scratch would be somewhat tolerable. In your situation it sounds like you are simply migrating a single machine. But more complex situation involving a network of machines, an appliance based solution such as for example Dell KACE K2000 would be the answer to Windows migration.
