Answer Wiki:
The Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) from Microsoft supports both client-side rendering and host-side rendering, as different environments have different requirements. For example, in bandwidth-constrained environments, client-side rendering tends to perform better over the network. That said, Microsoft announced Microsoft RemoteFX last week, a new set of RDP capabilities for delivering a rich media environment via host-side rendering to a broad range of client devices. Citrix has announced that HDX will extend the new RemoteFX platform capabilities once RemoteFX will be available as part of Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1.
