I have always been able to delete sent emails from the Sent folder. Now when I try to delete a line appears through the email and there is no option available to permanently delete the message. Has some sort of protect setting been selected?

Is the MS OL sets as empty messages every time when it is closed !, follow these steps to check it:
In MS OL>Tools > Select Options; click the Other tab and make sure that the check box beside Empty the Deleted Items folder upon exiting is selected / deselected….
