 Outlook 2007 error message when opening from shortcut

I can not start Outlook from desktop icon. I get an error message "Cannot start Microsoft Office Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook window." How do I fix the problem? What caused the problem? Thank you for your help in advance. Tom
