It could be due to an incompatible tape being used for the backup. Example if the tape is an LTO2 and you are using an LTO4 or later tape drive you cannot write to an LTO2. You can only read it. That might be your problem. I would look up the error code in your tape library documentation to see if I could find the answer for sure.

I wouldn’t have thought that a 9402-400 still in use today would be a likely host for a tape library. However, cartridge incompatibility is a possibility.
It might also be that the tape drive itself simply needs replacing.
