Memory upgrade not registering
I have just upgraded the memory on my Abit AH6 motherboard from 64mb (2x32mb) to 256mb (2x128mb).
When I start up the BIOS is only registering 128mb
MY Computer-System Properties - General registers 128 mb
and my System Information only shows 64mb.
I believe this may be something to do with the BIOS but I don't know what.
Can anybody advise what to do to register the whole 256mb throughout

Install one module and verify it works. Remove that module and install the other module and verify it works. If both modules are functioning then reinstall both modules and make sure they are both properly seated. BIOS usually auto detects changes in memory but I am not familiar with this particular motherboard.

In addition to the prvious message. Check for a bios upgrade, either from the computer manufacturer or the motherboard manufacturer. Its quit possible this motherboard will only read 128 meg, check out the motherboard book.
On some systems I have seen, you have to go into BIOS and either manually tell it what memory you have, or run a utility in BIOS to detect the new memory. Give that a try.
Most likely, either the stick is not seated fully (press firmly – just because the clips seat doesn’t mean that its all the way in) or that one of the sticks is bad.
Reseat both sticks, then try the BIOS.
According to ABITs Website this is a discontinued board. A resellers Website claims this board to have 3 slots for memory with a total capacity of 384 Mb of RAM. I could not find a manual for this board on ABITs Website but BIOS update information and files are available at .
If you plan on doing a BIOS update follow instruction exactly! A redundant power supply is recommended while doing this procedure. An interuppted BIOS update can make your system unusable.
I would almost bet that a) the stick isn’t seated properly or b) one stick is bad. I ran into this a couple of times in the past. Beware of off-brand memory and be mindful of the way it is handled. I had a case where I had bought RAM and it was immediately defective. I returned it and the next batch was also defective. I then took it back myself and had them bring it to the counter for me. She walked across a nylon carpet with the RAM in her bare hand. When she tried to hand it to me, I refused asking her to return that RAM to the back and bring me new stuff in an anti-stat bag……guess what? the new RAM worked as advertised.

This is a very old motherboard, and memory for it is quite hard to come by now. Are you certain you have the correct memory ? Memory required is 168 pin Single bank EDO or SDRAM 66MHZ. Also if I remember correctly you cannot mix the EDO type with SDRAM. Problem you appear to be having with only half memory showing could be caused by using Double Banked ram.
I do not believe this to be double banked RAM if the motherboard supplies an odd number of slots to fill. Of course, I am assuming that the reference to 3 available RAM slots in the vendor ad as being accurate.

I found an article on the web that said that some new memory sticks will not work with this old motherboard, so I took a 256mb stick from another pc and this worked, I then put the two 128mb sticks into the other pc and that worked. Still not 100% sure what was causing the problem but all works ok
