What are the standards for storing backup tape media once the systems information has been copied to the tapes? We would like to store the tapes on site being that the IDF is more than 1000 feet away and two fire walls are between the MDF and the IDF. The media would be stored in a fireproof UL rated safe.

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

There is no substitution for archiving a back up tape off site on a regular basis. We send our daily back up to a safety deposit box at our bank. Our runner takes the new tape in and brings the old one back when he takes the daily banking deposits and paperwork. This practice is now habit, and thus painless. Most people think of fire when they think of a disaster that takes down their system, but in todays world you have to be aware of the possibility of even more catostrophic events occuring. Many companies in the World Trade centers were glad they had an off site store of their critical business information. Many others went out of business because they didn’t. Paranoia is a good thing when it comes to backing up your data.
