I have a Maxtor 1TB OneTouch4 external drive which is not reliably detected when my Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit machine wakes from sleep, when it has been asleep overnight almost never. The only way to make sure it is there is to reboot.

Have you tried hard mapping it to your computer?  I had a problem with a Seagate external drive like this and when I hard mapped it, the problem resolved itself.

Just go to your system, right click, go to Map drive, and then type the path.  If you do not know the path, you can browse for it.

Right click on Computer (desktop icon) select Manage and in computer management, click disk management, here you can see this drive letter (hopefully), if it is a brand new and no data, then you can format it to make it workable. If it is not showing, you can contact to the vendor from where you purchased.

Have you tried to see if it happens using hibernate? When you say reliably, does it work some time and not others? If so does it tend to work on short sleep periods vs. long sleep periods?
