Mark as read when opened

In Thunderbird 2.something I disabled the automatic mark as read when the message is displayed in the preview window, but the message would still get marked as read when I double click to open the message in a window. In 3.0 I double click to open the message in a tab and when I close the tab the message is still marked as 'unread'. Is there a way to have the message marked as 'read' when it has been opened in a tab?

Software/Hardware used:
Thunderbird 3.0.4 on Mac OS 10.5.8
