Managing snapshots in a VMware environment
I am running a VMware environment and have recently taken four snapshots. Due to an available space issue, I was forced to delete three of these snapshots. I could not properly clean up those deleted snapshots and, as a result, the vmdk files from them still exist in the environment. Obviously I want to clean up these snapshot files, but when I try to rename them and start the VMware machine I receive a “parent directory not found” error. What should I do?

While I don’t have an “easy fix” for this, I have 2 URLs that explain what they did to fix it (neither is an easy fix). You can read their solutions at: http://communities.vmware.com/message/884186 http://www.learnosity.com/techblog/index.cfm/2007/6/23/VMWare-partial-snapshot-recovery-HowTo I can tell you, if it were my VM Guest, instead of taking the more complex routes in the linked instructions, I would just image it to a fresh VM and just make sure I use the VMware interface to remove any snapshots in the future.
