Managing Failed Lots in JDE E1 8.12 QA Module

If you have any tips to get the most from this module for new users, whether it's configuration/setup advice, or using "vanilla" functionality to manage a complex quality program, please advise.
One specific question we have is this:
Should you release lots using the "Manage Failed Lot" functionality, or if a lot goes on hold because of a failed test, should you use the Lot Status Update functionality?
