Which technologie should I use between SMI-S and SNMP to manage an EMC SAN?
I heard that SMI-S offers more management for SAN. What can SMI-S do that SNMP cannot do?
If you are an all EMC storage shop, why are you looking at SMI or SNMP?
Define the necessity for SMI or SNMP first. Make sure you definitely need it, and then work back to the solution.

If you live outside the United States, by submitting your email address you consent to having your personal data transferred to and processed in the United States.
That all depends – what EMC products do you have, and how do you plan on managing/monitoring them?
If you have ECC as part of your EMC purchase, I wouldn’t worry about SMI vs. SNMP – ECC will take care of that for you.
If you’re looking to roll your own management suite – good luck, SMI APIs don’t look all that simple to code against.
If you’re looking at monitoring the storage with something like OpenView, Director, or an OSS tool like Nagios, the answer again depends on what you have.
