Managing a sytem with both SQL Server 2000 and SQL Server 2005

I am the systems administrator on a system that has both SQL Server 2000 and SQL Server 2005 running on it. When they are starting up, the system works fine, but when we reboot the server, the 2 SQL Servers appear to fight each other for resources and the system crashes. This does not occur every reboot, only roughly every other one. Why can't our two SQL Servers coexist in this situation?

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

Because you can’t dedicate resources to SQL Server 2000, so it will take all the resourses it can find oblivious to the SQL Server 2005 which you can dedicate resource to, which 2000 will ignore.

Running two instance of different version is not something I would recommend to do anyway. Servers are cheap. A HP DL 385 or 585 make excellent SQL Server 2005 machines!
