Mail stuck in th Messages Pending Submission queue

Microsoft Exchange
Hi We have a relatively new Exchange Server 2003 (Entpr) running on Win2003 (Entpr) in a Win2003 domain. The Exchange server is not a DC but does have Sophos Enterprise Server installed, running Pure Message and Antivirus. We have a little less than 100 users and the Exchange Server is well over spec'd for its current chores. The mail has been running without problem for about 3 months since we installed Exchange, however last week it developed a problem. All the Outlook MAPI and OWA clients could apparently connect and send mail however none was being delivered. On investigation we found that all the mail was just sitting in the Messages Pending Submission queue, with no unusual errors in the event log. A reboot shifted the queue ok but since then the problem has re-occurred a couple of times a day. As a short-term fix we are stopping the inetinfo.exe process to shift the queue, which saves a reboot, but are no closer to finding the actual problem. Any ideas would be very welcome??

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

My first suspect is Sophos Enterprise Server binding with the SNMP in your exchange server. Try stopping it for a few days. If possible to install it on a different machine as a from SNMP server that would be ideal.
I have seen the same problem with other SPAM anti virus products.
In some cases the product in question was scanning the exchange program files as well as the databases causing a similar simpton.
In some other cases the SNMP bindding was not handle correctly and you get two programs that uses event syncs fighting for the mail that arrives and or goes out of your exchange server.
Like I said stop( disable the services) sophos and restart the server and see if it happens again. That will cue you in to the problem.

You most likely have the SAV scanning your queues directory for email messages. That is a no-no for AV and exchange. Try shutting off the SAV or just put the right exclusions to remove the exchsrvr directory (EDBs, STMs and LOGs) and also find where your SMTP queues are and make sure they are excluded as well. Also exclude the c:windowssystem32inetsrvmetabase.xml file as if you scan that you can corrupt the IIS metabase which will require a Remove and Reinstall of IIS and Exchange which is not fun.

PDMeat has it nailed most likely. Configure inside Sophos to exclude anything in SMTP or Exchange data files and queues.
