Lotus Notes upgrade from 6.5 to 6.5.4

Lotus Notes 6.5.4, Lotus Notes 6.x, Upgrading Lotus Notes

Hi
Is there an easy way to do a Lotus Notes version upgrade, or do you have to do a new install, like creating a new user ? Anyone knows if the local databases created in 6.5 will be lost and have to be recreated, when an upgrade to 6.5.4 is taking place ?
I hope an upgrade can we done, similar to a windows update, where you just "add" the changes.
Thank you in advance.

For a Lotus Notes client upgrade, it is simply an installation of the software. You run the installer, choose your options, and you're done. When you launch Notes the next time, it will all be the same. To be safe, you should make backups of the notes.ini (in your Notes program directory), as well as your Notes ID (xyz.id), names.nsf, and bookmark.nsf.

There are specific upgrade kits you can run to do incremental upgrades. Get them from the IBM downloads pages. The one you want will be 6.5.x to 6.5.6 FP2, I believe. There is no logic to upgrading to 6.5.4 when a more up-to-date upgrade is available.

I have never seen any database become unuseable due to an upgrade. The backup suggestions Mblazar posted are good, of course.

Hi Brooklynegg

These upgrade kits are they for free on the IBM downloadspage ?

I mean, I get an update CD from our central IT department, but I guess what you suggest is more easy :-).

Those downloadable upgrades were always for single point releases, such as going from 6.5.1 to 6.5.2. If you wanted to get to 6.5.4 or 6.5.6 (yes, a better choice, but I wasn’t going to ask since there is also R7 & R8 out there, which are better choices), you’d have to run the incremental installer several times. Often, these fail if it finds a single file that seems to be out of revision, even if that file is inconsequential. If you’re jumping several point releases, the full installation is the best choice.

Cheers,

Mike

Hi

Thanks to both of you. I think we will do the full update then.

But I will for sure keep the incremental update in mind :-)

Bye.

I believe mBlazar is not correct. I know I have used an incremental installer that will take any version of 6.5 (e.g. 6.5.x ) and upgrade it to the new level without having to run multiple upgrades, from 6.5.4 to 6.5.5, then 6.5.5 to 6.5.6, etc.

You can freely browse the IBM download pages and find the exacty upgrade package you need, note its product number and file name, then as your IT department to pull down the exact file you need. I would browse and find the direct link to the information, but it take some time and I don’t know your OS version, etc. Besides, it would be good experience for you. You will have full access to information, you just won’t be able to download what you find. Your IT department will complete the work.

Ok: I said I wasn’t going to do any searching aroung, but I did some google searches anyhow. This might be what you wanted.

This is what I searched for on Goooooogle.
-> site:ibm.com 6.5.x incremental client 6.5.6

This is the search result URL.
-> http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=site%3Aibm.com+6.5.x+incremental+client+6.5.6

I don’t know what happened to the google results page link I tried to post. Here it is again, just as text. Copy/paste to url address to get results.

<a href="http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=site%3Aibm.com+6.5.x+incremental+client+6.5.6" rel="nofollow">http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=site%3Aibm.com+6.5.x+incremental+client+6.5.6</a>

Note, upgrading to R7 or ND8 is a full upgrade and should be done with lots of testing. Normal caution applies. Not saying they aren’t stable, I’m just saying.
