Did you try to Open it then ,,,
Refresh Design
Replace Design
Rebuild Views ( Ctrl+Shift+F9)
On more then to take care of is to upgrade your Lotus Notes client to the latest ones e.g. V8.5.3

I did have to do the Replace Design approach to fix the original problem (”Type mismatch on external name: UIMEMODOCUMENT) that led to the problem I wrote about above. It helped fix the original problem.
But the loss of emails was real. I don’t know whether archiving to a previous archive set up some kind of circular reference that caused them to be deleted, but they were nowhere to be found. The reason the file size was still large was because the .nsf database had not been compacted since erasing all the messages, so it “appeared” large, but wasn’t actually using most of that space.
In the end, the solution was sort of “old school”. My IT guys found a prior backup of my Lotus mail.nsf file when searching which .nsf files were still on my system. We were able to link to that and obtain the 4800 missing emails.
