Outlook is somewhat easy, yet, confusing.  When you first delete an item, it goes to the Deleted folder, it can be retrieved from there.  Once you delete it from the Deleted folder, it is gone forever, goodbye.  Same thing when it comes to the archive folder.  It is a folder by itself.  If you delete the contents or the folder itself, it is gone forever.  I know this is late coming, but, here is some advise.  I create my .pst folders by year.  At the end of each year, I disconnect it from Outlook and also archive the calendar for that year.  I then burn that entire year, depending on the size, to a CD or DVD.  Now I have history of all my emails going back ten years and trust me, it has saved my butt quite a few times especially when someone states that they never received or read your email.
