What exactly is an enterprise service bus...is it the same thing as an intermediary?

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

An ESB is a category of middleware which enables a service-oriented architecture through a standards based messaging engine (usually XML based).

While it seems that there are quite a few “straight answers”, I think they all conform to the above statement. As to whether or not it’s the same thing as an “intermediary”, that depends on your definition of intermediary as well, but an ESB is an intermediary of one form or another.
