Looking for good network simulator software
I'm going to be teaching a class on basic network theory. The budget is very tight, and I don't have a lot of hardware to play with. I'm looking for a network simulator, one that allows students to program switches and routers and the NICS of the virtual network (CISCO would be nice...but then that's probably asking a lot.) Then perhaps send virtual packets around the virtual network. This class is covering only basic concepts. Something that is clear and concise will work best, but I'm willing to check out just about anything. Preferred answers will contains some first hand experience with the recommended program, but any web finds that look promising are welcome as well.

Well, this site is supposed to have an online Cisco lab but I have not seen it operating. Maybe contact the owner and see what he suggests. You might also find some spare gear at a refurbisher that would allow you to use it temporarily for training. I recently purchased NetSim from Tetcos for training / teaching at our organization. It would fit your needs perfectly. The software has simulations, animations (to understand different concepts), programming (to try out some hands-on codes) and some great tutorials. Most importantly it quite cheap. Some negatives: The demo on the web site isn't great so you need to write in and try an eval. It isn't useful for any ccna related training. And it's not deep enough to carry out research level stuff. You can check it out at www.tetcos.com
